A man in Utah shot himself in the chest with a hunting rifle and died while his ex-girlfriend watched over a webcamera. Watching a loved one hurt themselves has to be terrible, but watching over the internet, helpless to stop it, has to be a lot worse. Terrible. [KSL]

The Inmarsat-4, or I4-F3 broadband satellite to its friends, is a big satellite. Almost as big as a double decker bus and with an unfurled solar wingspan as wide as a football field, it needed an appropriately big ride into space. And so it hitched onto a Proton Rocket, a 58m-high, 700-ton monster used for sat positioning since 1996, but before that, used in the 1960's to visit planets for scientific research and deliver parts ...

I had the perfect backdrop to review this Pentax W60 waterproof camera while vacationing in Hawaii last week. It's 10mp, has a 5x zoom, and does HD level video, but the only reason to buy such a point and shoot is that it's rated to 13 feet of underwater depth for two hours, and is the smallest waterproof camera of its kind. It would prove to be a fortuitous addition to my travel gear, catching ...

The only thing cooler than a review of the new Millenium Falcon toy? A review of the Millenium Falcon toy by geek storyteller Jesse Alexander, who has worked on Giz favorites like Heroes, Alias and Lost. P.S. I think that's an emmy on his desk. More of Jesse's impressions, below: "The new Legacy Collection Millennium Falcon from HASBRO is the greatest Star Wars toy ever made. No joke. Beats Amidala’s Royal Starship. Beats the AT-AT. ...

The Nike Hyperdunks 2015 edition are cool reminders of the love we all have for Back to the Future. But I think you'll agree when I say they'd be like 100x cooler with power laces. So I've been chatting up Phil Torrone, Nick Bilton, and a few others nerds to get some ideas on how to do it. We're researching how to make them, and if you've got advice or think you can pull it ...

Maclife suggests ferrite beads as a fix for the GSM buzz emanating from speakers when placed near a busy cellphone. I found some of the snap variety you can order from Radio Shack, but am unsure of this trick working when it comes to situations where the entire length of cable is receiving interference, or on an input cable like that on a tape adapter where the signal eventually gets amplified. Nike's limited edition 2015 variant of the Hyperdunk Supremes just got here. The sneakers aren't just pretty — they're incredibly light for a high top at 13-ounces. The translucent rubberized upper has threads running through it at a crosspattern. Nike calls it Flywire tech, but I also recognize the idea from professional sailboat race sails, which run kevlar through the material to give it resistance to stretching and tearing, as well as more tensile strength. ...

No word on what it does besides "improve stability and performance". Keep in mind that this comes a few days after iPhone app DRM was cracked, so if you're dabbling in the black arts of app swapping, you probably want to wait til someone else reports on whether this affects that or not before upgrading.

I was not impressed with Esquire's E-ink cover idea, but Joel Johnson at BBG has interviewed the Esky overlords and changed my mind a bit. Surprisingly, Esquire expects us to buy these mags and hack them. Second, Ford advertisements, also in E-ink, displaced some of the cost of production. That's good news for us. I still think its wasteful when they could do the same thing through Amazon or Sony's e-books for far less, but ...

Sunday morning, Philippe Kahn of camera phone fame and Richard Clarke successfully finished their double handed record attempt of the Transpac Cup. The sleep deprived two man team survived squall after squall, cuts and bruises, waves the size of small buildings, exploding rigging, and fishing nets wrapped around their keels to arrive from SF to Honolulu in 7 days, 20 hours and 50 minutes. They not only beat the old double handed record by about ...

Rich Dancaster has flown commercial jets for a long time. He's got 16,000 flight hours under his belt, which is more than some of us have in cars. When Virgin America and Galactic announced a plan to work together, he figured it was sheer marketing. Then he got the call that he'd be going through an intense training program to pilot a spaceship. You'd never believe a man who looks like a cross between Chuck ...

Update: More Photos of WhiteKnightTwo below. Interview with a spaceship pilot. Actually it's a flight simulator for pilot training. Virgin America pilots will be trained to fly Virgin Galactic flights, which makes them the luckiest commercial pilots in the country. Before the ship rolls out, I might as well scribe a ...

I love stupid gimmicks, don't get me wrong. But this cover is one of the worst ideas I've heard from a publication in awhile. Said the editor to the NYTimes: “Magazines have basically looked the same for 150 years,” Mr. Granger said. “I have been frustrated with the lack of forward movement in the magazine industry.” Maybe you should like, invest in putting premium content on your website, or in E-books sold on Amazon instead ...

Ryan Block, editor of Engadget, announced his resignation today. When I first heard the news, I was blindsided with a loss of competitive bearing followed by some strange sorrow. I suppose I'd explain it by saying Ryan is probably the best frienemy a guy could possibly ask for. The press has often played up the competition between our sites, and I admittedly contribute to that reporting for the sake of the story. But however different ...
