Filed under: Industry, Programming, Awards, Reality-FreeThe Emmy Awards voting is different than it used to be (more steps in the voting process and a special panel watches episodes and votes after that), and last year the list of the semifinalists was leaked online before it was officially announced. Well, the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences don't really want that to happen again, so they've decided to just announce the finalist list itself. After the ...

The Wall Street Journal recently ran an article about proposed regulation of TV product placement disclosure that would have significant relevance for the growing web video business of advertiser sponsored, viral video campaigns. The gist of the article is that the FCC is looking into requiring TV shows to include notices similar to what political candidates must say before or after campaign ads. “You shouldn’t need a magnifying glass to know who’s pitching you,” said ...

Photo: Getty Images 30 Rock's third season ended a month ago, and we're still going through withdrawal. But how's the cast holding up? And what do they do to stay in shape during the off-season? Last night, at the Cinema Society's premiere of Trumbo, Vulture's Darrell Hartman caught up with the uphill skiing champion Judah Friedlander, the show's Frank Rossitano, and, in real life, the greatest athlete on earth. So are you doing stand-up these ...

Even though there's no love lost between NBC and iTunes, that doesn't mean NBC doesn't love you! At least if you've got an iPhone or iPod touch. They're streaming full episodes of 30 Rock and The Office to iPhones (and touches) in Quicktime, for free, with NO ads. They work, nicely, but the major catch is that if you exit Safari, you've gotta re-DL all over again, and the files are huge, so is this ...

I had a crazy weekend. And in all the craziness, I ran out of time to go see “Baby Mama” as I had planned. My disappointment at missing opening weekend is tempered by the fact that even without my oh-so-important ticket buying contribution, the film still topped the box office taking in over $18 million. Not to get all “girls rule, boys drool” on you here, but there is something rather satisfying about the fact ...

The uncanny valley is that strange place in digital graphics where a human looks so almost real that the figure is actually more upsetting to the viewer than if they were playing, say, Rainbow Six Vegas 2 with two white sticks and a ball. For anyone who may have missed 30 Rock last week, here's the uncanny valley better articulated with the kind of references we can all understand (porn and Star Wars). As for ...

Filed under: 30 Rock, Reality-FreeLike Bob wrote the other day in his TV Squad review, 30 Rock is the kind of show that you have to watch and really pay attention to in order to get all the great lines and jokes. That includes the lids on Judah Friedlander's noggin. At a recent event, a New York Observer reporter cornered 30 Rock's Frank with a few questions ... all about his hats. The baseball caps ...

"30 Rock" spoilers coming up just as soon as I hit the vending machine...Okay, they're back.Aside from the ongoing one-note-ness of Will Arnett as Devin Banks (and it pains me to speak ill of Gob), "Succession" was a fabulous episode, at once a great showcase for Tina Fey as an actress, an inspired riff on "Amadeus," and maybe the funniest Dr. Spaceman appearance ever. After once more having fun with Liz's low self-esteem (she wants to ...

Filed under: Industry, Programming, OpEd, Watercooler Talk, Reality-FreeEdward Wyatt's New York TImes piece questioned whether NBC crossed the line by broadcasting racy material in the "family hour." On both 30 Rock and The Office, the writers let loose, basically presenting what you might call adult rated moments in what NBC asserts is family time. All I have to say to that is, "What? There's a family hour? Since when?" Apparently, I wasn't the only one ...

Courtesy of NBC Way back in 2006, when 30 Rock and Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip premiered on NBC, you wouldn't have found many people who would bet that Tina Fey's behind-the-scenes-at-a-sketch- show sitcom would outlast Aaron Sorkin's behind-the-scenes-at-a-sketch-show drama. But that was before Fey's show shook off a crummy pilot and found its comedic stride, while Studio 60 quickly became a weekly airing of Aaron Sorkin's grudges against everyone who ever was mean ...

Courtesy of CBS, Disney, Fox, and Sony. Or did we just make them up?MILF Island only debuted a week ago (on last Thursday's episode of 30 Rock), and already it's being universally hailed as the greatest fake reality show of all time. It wasn't funny because it was ridiculous — it was funny because it wasn't that much more ridiculous than much of the other nonsense Hollywood is green-lighting these days. It could be post-writers'-strike ...

That "MILF Island" episode of 30 Rock everyone was talking about Friday? In which 20 hot moms square off in front of 50 eighth-grade boys at "Erection Cove?" It aired during NBC's "Family Hour," in which the whole family is supposed to be able to gather in front of the TV together. NBC executive Ben Silverman re-launched the concept just 10 days ago. Anyone who took the man at his word — and hopefully few ...

On last night's season premiere of Tina Fey's brilliant 30 Rock, Alec Baldwin's Jack is riding high on the huge success of a new reality show. MILF Island's conceit: "20 MILFs; 50 eighth-grade boys; no rules." The idea, which Baldwin's GE executive had floated in an earlier episode, is so preposterous, so outrageous, that I thought for a second that it was a real show. In this late phase of reality television, in which VH1 ...
