The official synopsis for Religulous says that Bill Maher "applies his characteristic honesty" to the subject of faith. Apparently, he has a somewhat selective definition of honesty. I've noted the sleights of hand used with Francis Collins and John...

This is a very silly story. Spring Hill resident Anita Koper thought she'd heard it all - until last week, when her 12-year-old daughter came home from school at Explorer K-8 and started asking her about "revolution." "She said her science teacher told the class that in some religions, if you are bad, you come back in another life as a dog, cow or pig," Koper said. She said she soon realized her daughter was ...

Texas scientists have finally stopped agonizing over creationism and gotten busy organizing. Today, a group of university professors announced in a press conference the 21st Century Science Coalition, a vehicle to promote science education in Texas and push back against the retrograde agenda at the State Board of Education. It’s about time. The obscure but powerful board is a known hotbed of pseudo-scientific activity. At least six of its 15 members, including Chairman Don McLeroy, ...

I would say that this Sarah Palin business just isn't funny anymore, but then I couldn't illustrate the following news with a Flintstones picture. "Soon after Sarah Palin was elected mayor of the foothill town of Wasilla, Alaska, she startled a local music teacher by insisting in casual conversation that men and dinosaurs coexisted on an Earth created 6,000 years ago—about 65 million years after scientists say most dinosaurs became extinct—the teacher said." Palin told ...

Via Ed Brayton, Salon reports disturbing evidence that Sarah Palin is a follower of Young Earth Creationism: "I pushed her on the earth's creation, whether it was really less than 7,000 years old and whether dinosaurs and humans walked the earth at the same time. And she said yes, she'd seen images somewhere of dinosaur fossils with human footprints in them." Palin may have been referring to shyster Carl Baugh's dino-human footprint scam. A hoax ...

Via New Humanist, I discover what might or might not be the smoking gun in the Sarah Palin/ Creationism mystery. Anti-Palin blogger Philip Munger, who calls himself the Progressive Alaskan (he's far from alone up there, incidentally) recalls having a conversation with her in June 1997, when she was Mayor of the important (for Alaska) but tiny (for anywhere else) town of Wasilla. It was at a "graduation ceremony for home-schoolers" which may be relevant: ...

In some ways last week was a triumphant one for science. The physicists succeeded in drumming up extraordinary journalistic (and thus public) interest in an ultimately quite boring event, the turning on of the Large Hadron Collider. When the experiments at CERN actually begin early next year, there may well be great discoveries to be had (and we're all rooting for Peter Higgs and his elusive boson). Last week, though, the coverage could offer little ...

I am a Christian. I cannot imagine being a Republican. I cannot in one million years imagine myself choosing to vote for John McCain and Sarah Palin. Not only that, but I cannot imagine any Christian being in agreement with them morally, ethically or any other way. Here are my reasons: The false claim that they are pro-life Make no mistake here. Someone who is pro-life respects ALL life, not simply the lives of the ...

Reports are still coming in, but so far it seems that the Earth has not been destroyed by the LHC. We don’t have enough information yet, but it seems to still be here. It is potentially arguable though, that we don’t have any transitional Earths between yesterday and today, and so the theory of the Earth still existing remains just that. It seems equally likely that the Earth was destroyed yesterday, but then instantly recreated ...

I have never seen anything like this. The left is in complete meltdown over Sarah Palin. The above picture is from Salon Magazine's article, "The Dominatrix: Sarah Palin is trying to seduce independent voters. But she comes across like a whip-wielding mistress who wants to discipline a naughty America." Does the author, Gary Kamiya, seem to be losing his gripFour years after Americans looked at the first term of the worst president in modern history ...

Since I’ve posted two articles about Sarah Palin’s statements on creationism, let’s go across the aisle and see what the fanatical Darwin-hating creationists at “Answers In Genesis” think. They’re also examining Palin’s statements, and of course they’re eagerly hoping she’ll be an advocate for their weird pseudo-science: Is She Really a Creationist? (Notice how they add footnotes everywhere to make it seem like a scholarly work.) Before we look at Gov. Palin’s beliefs on creation/evolution ...

This is pretty easy. Science class should be for teaching science. Creationism is not science. How hard is that? From the Alaska Daily News (because they know her better than John McCain) The volatile issue of teaching creation science in public schools popped up in the Alaska governor’s race this week when Republican Sarah Palin said she thinks creationism should be taught alongside evolution in the state’s public classrooms. Palin was answering a question from ...

ScienceDebate2008 has, since the spring, sought to secure the responses of the Presidential candidates on issues of scientific concern going beyond the basic talking points, either in a debate format (*ahem* hence the name…) or press releases. Obama has chosen to issue the latter; McCain has, as of yet, not expressed an interest in either. Obama’s responses have won PZ Myers’ cautious support, and my full support. Two of his answers in particular merit review ...

It’s no surprise any more that Sarah Palin is fairly far right (and the electorate is catching on), so far even that she supports a place in the science classroom for creationism, at least to “teach the controversy.” I disapprove. Honestly, were I even questioning voting for McCain, endorsement of such poor science would be a dealbreaker. Call me shallow, but I care about how our elected officials understand the operation of science. Especially after ...

It's a common question, and it isn't easy to explain, since much of it is complicated while the simple parts are often counter-intuitive. But here's a comic that tries and illustrates the problem. Here's the correct explanation, that actually jibes with the evidence. Here's the ID/creationist explanation: Then, of course, in the competition of ideas, the two hash it out and…well, you'll have to read the whole thing yourself. Sad to say, the ending rings ...

Some Christian schnook visited a museum, read a sign, and complained to the museum. So what did the museum do? An information sign, which is part of Abington Park Museum's display about Charles Darwin and fossils, was covered up after a visitor's complaint. Two parts of the sign, concerning 'Changing Attitudes to Evolution', are obscured with black paper, but only four lines of text are actually covered over. It details how Charles Darwin used the ...

I applaud McCain's VP choice, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, as his choice for vice president, because she is going guarantee McCain's defeat! Nice work, Senator McCain!Sarah Palin is the worst vice president candidate in recent memory. We can ignore her utter lack of relevant experience – that's like shooting fish in a barrel. No, the real issues are her opposition to virtually every ethical advance we've made as a society over the last few decades. ...
