Back in the early 1990s, email was a privilege granted only to those who could prove they needed it. Now, it has turned into a nuisance that's costing companies millions. We may feel that we have it under control, but not only do we check email more often than we realise, but the interruptions caused are more detrimental than was previously thought. In a study last year, Dr Thomas Jackson of Loughborough University found that ...

Bloggers and Web developers know better than to simply toss their e-mail addresses on their blogs and sites these days unless they have exceptional spam filtering. At the same time, if you're a site owner and you want to be able to connect with your readers when they have concerns or comments, you have a dilemma if you don't want to provide an e-mail address and risk getting spammed, or you don't want to integrate ...

Studies have shown that we spend a great deal of our online time in our inbox. There have been many interesting techniques and strategies for saving time and managing your email in better ways. You know, things like how to be an email ninja, how to achieve inbox zero or how to make peace with your inbox and stop sleeping on the couch (OK, I made that one up, but you get the point). This ...

Google Calendar is a great, if not the best available tool to share calendars. However, it’s tedious to edit and keep track of it via the web interface. In saving time, integration is your best friend. Naturally, there is a vast amount of addons and tools to sync, integrate and simply work more efficiently with Google Calendar. For example you can sync it with mobile devices like the Blackberry or iPhone using GoogleSync. Then you ...

After 15 years or so of marketing via email, a solid body of knowledge and best practices is evolving, based on both experience and research. However, the industry still hasn’t reached consensus on a number of fundamental precepts in email marketing. In these “debates,” followers of each side often make compelling, even impassioned, arguments why their view should prevail. I initially came up with a list of about eight disagreements, but narrowed it to three ...

In this series of articles, you will learn how to insert links into e-mail messages with a variety of e-mail clients and webmail services. A hyperlink is a reference in a document that takes you somewhere else — to either another document, another place in another document, or specific place within another document. On the web, links help you navigate to other web pages, web sites, and spots within web pages. Hyperlinks are very helpful ...

If you’ve ever sent me a large file through email, you probably know how much I hate it. No one escapes a lecture! Just because GMail and other services give you gigabytes of storage, doesn’t mean that it’s okay to send really large attachments. I was happy to read that one my favorite blogs posted about the subject today. From the Microsoft Office Outlook Team Blog: Putting any issues with your e-mail service provider’s limits ...

Three websites on three different shared servers were compromised by a hacker through weak FTP passwords. The hacker uploaded a trojan to these hosting packages and so these three servers were placed on anti-spam blacklists. All three website owners have been contacted now and their FTP passwords reset. The offending files have been removed and the servers should be fully out of the blacklists soon. In the meantime for any users of the following servers they ...

Ubiquity is a new experiment from Mozilla Labs that allows you to take bits and pieces of the Web and make them work together just by typing in basic text. It’s an Extension for Firefox that allows you, as the user, to decide what Ubiquity should do. This happens by giving Ubiquity commands. On the developer end, it allows you to create commands that other people can subscribe to and use. I installed Ubiquity this ...

Cisco has acquired PostPath for $215M in an attempt to add email and calendaring features to its WebEx.

When describing Twitter, I use a number of analogies. Most commonly, I think of Twitter as something like a slow-motion chatroom, or even a collection of away messages. I’ve got another one to add to this list: subject-only email. This new analogy actually comes from my use of the iPhone, where the Twitter interface isn’t all that different from the mail interface. Twitter displays a sender and a brief message, which mirrors the sender and ...

The behavior of most email subscribers proves that the promise of email marketing is still more appealing than the actual email marketing received. Think about it. Lots of people opt in. Not many subscribers are active. The variance in those two numbers is what I call the “optimization opportunity” for your program. Throw away your list growth metrics — they mean nothing to the bottom line. Instead, adopt more meaningful measures of ROI that reflect ...
