Ever since Hulu, the online-video joint venture backed by NBC, News Corp. and $100 million in private equity launched in March 2008, the service has been slowly winning over critics, including yours truly. And if that isn’t enough -– the company is rising to the top in the web video rankings. According to Nielsen data, Hulu is now the No. 8 most popular video web site, it’s and rising fast. It was ranked No. 10 ...

Nielsen has released its VideoCensus rankings of the top online video sites for July, and it looks like long-tail television site Hulu is the company to watch. In July, Hulu’s traffic grew to 105 million streams per month, and the site leapfrogged several competitors to become eighth most popular vide site. Not bad for a site that’s only been live for five months. Hulu Close To Overtaking YouTube What’s really amazing about Hulu, though, is ...

Hulu the video streaming website, recently launched in March is already making inroads and went past Time Warner’s (TWX) property’s CNN and Turner Networks, although just a fraction behind Disney’s ESPN. According to a stats update by Nielsen, Fox and NBC racked up about 105 million video streams in July – an advancement from their 80 mil streams in May. Hulu might have gained lead and become the 8th largest video site in the U.S. ...

We thank the online video gods for Hulu, if for no other reason than the ability to write a Nielsen web video measurement post without the headline “YouTube Still #1.” Sure, YouTube is still in first place in terms of video plays, with more than 5 billion video streams served to more than 77 million unique users in July. But Hulu is now No. 8 in Nielsen’s ranking of the top 10 video sites, generating ...

Filed under: Home Entertainment PlayOn wants to make sure you can get your daily dose of Barackrolls and Airwolf episodes beyond the desktop, while Hulu might not have a slick streaming set-top box of its own, this media server software turns flash video RSS streams into easily browsed folders for your DLNA-compliant hardware. PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and HP MediaSmart HDTVs being at the top of that list (with Nintendo Wii support planned by year-end) ...

Video hosting provider Hulu has announced a distribution partnership with the Food Network today. Actually the deal is with Scripps Networks who owns Food Network and will also include clips from Fine Living, HGTV and DIY. The initial batch of clips range from 2-4 minutes and most carry a 30-second pre-roll video ad. That's some ratio of content to ad! I actually had the opportunity to spend a week at the Food Network studios about ...

Perhaps the biggest disconnect in the digital landscape today is between the Internet and the TV set. Consumers have been buying big, new high-definition TVs in large numbers and, separately, are watching more and more video from online sources like YouTube, Hulu and iTunes. But the two trends have yet to merge. Despite the efforts of big names like Microsoft (MSFT), Apple (AAPL) and TiVo (TIVO), relatively few people are watching Internet video on their ...

Hulu today beefed up its HD gallery, which continues to be a testing ground for higher-quality video rather than a more pervasive aspect of the video site. The HD gallery launched in December with 10 movie trailers; now it contains a total of 27 full TV episodes, documentaries, and sports and movie excerpts (and whoo-hoo, the first game of this year’s NBA finals). That includes Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog in its HD entirety, which is ...

What is it with us denizens of the Internet? Free isn’t cheap enough for us, apparently. When a band like Radiohead comes out with an album, puts it up on a website for us, and gets more press coverage than just about any album release in recent memory, and says “Hey, pay us for it if you want to,“ we still feel the need to “steal it” off Bittorrent. So says a research paper from ...

Silicon Alley Insider’s Dan Frommer today is challenging Apple to move Apple TV from being a “hobby” to being a real business: If Steve Jobs wants to make a serious run at owning our living room’s “digital hub,” then Apple TV needs a serious overhaul, ASAP. Why now? Because even though the industry is still nascent, the Internet-connected living room is becoming more of a realistic proposition. And the market is quickly getting more crowded. ...

The amount of officially sanctioned free television content on the Web is growing rapidly. The problem is: many people don’t yet know of its existence, and those that do, have no way of keeping up with additions, and finding the content easily. Blinkx has hopefully solved the latter problem with its new Blinkx Remote service. Initially available in the UK, but with a US-centric version to follow, it’s kind of like a Google for free ...

This post contains parts of a 2 hour interview I did with Tangos Chan from China Web2.0 Review. Among others I asked him about his views on the globalization of Chinese Internet companies, the future of the Chinese Internet market, and the role of VCs. Pieter-Paul Walraven: What are your thoughts on Chinese Internet companies going abroad? Tangos Chan: Actually most of the Chinese companies will not consider a globalization strategy so far because the ...

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, Video, Reality-FreeI guess it's the flexibility brought about by the nature of the Dr. Horrible production. Or maybe it's just a good way to keep making noise so people find the show. Either way, as announced on the Dr. Horrible Twitter feed, the formerly iTunes-exclusive episodes are back online over at Hulu, with a few changes. The episodes now come with short sponsor messages, and you also have the option ...

Like all good supervillains, Joss Whedon’s Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog has resurfaced, and is now available for free online over at Hulu. This is a bit of a surprise as Horrible was only supposed to be available for free online for a few days before vanishing and re-emerging as a paid download or DVD. At least this time around, the audience will earn Whedon a few bucks in ad revenue. The entire series is presented ...

Last night we wrote about the new set of embeddable widgets that video streaming service Hulu has launched. It sure seems like the widgets load very slowly. While watching the widget load, I noticed that they are grabbing data and pushing it to Omniture's tracking beacon. This is the same beacon we wrote about with regards to Adobe and their potential spyware. There's nothing in the Hulu privacy policy regarding the widgets and any sort ...

Finally a widget I can get behind: TV and movie site Hulu has built a set of highly configurable widgets that can preview or even play full episodes in the middle of a Web page. Now if only they'd carry the entire Season 4 backlog of Battlestar Galactica.
