As anticipated, Microsoft unveiled the latest version of their Adobe Flash competitor this morning. Silverlight 2 (build 2.0.31005.0) removes the 'Beta' tag and takes the product 'Final'. A quick preview across a number of Windows based computers provided some interesting results, as well as a few disturbing ones. Silverlight 2 performed like a rock star using Microsoft's Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2. Similarly, it rendered Silverlight-based rich media graphics well with Internet Explorer 7. The ...

As you now know, Windows 7 is being officially called… Windows 7. Microsoft has been pretty tight on leaks up to now so we haven’t had a great deal of information about the upcoming OS, however here are some of the features which you will see introduced with Windows 7: Evolutionary changes. This means substantial performance improvements, UI changes and security improvements. Windows 7 basically will improve on all of Windows Vista’s real and perceived ...

Microsoft has announced that the next version of its Windows operating system will be named simply Windows 7 - exactly the product codename for the Vista successor. 7 here actually has a very simple explanation as this is the seventh release of Windows for Microsoft - hence the decision. The next Windows iteration will be shown for the first time to application developers at two conferences to take place in Los Angeles in a few ...

Frank Shaw answers back. He’s the head of Microsoft’s account at Waggener Edstrom, Microsoft’s main PR firm (and has been for years). Frank’s one of the smartest guys in the PR business, so it’s good for him to step in here. He basically has a finger lashing for everyone involved in yesterday’s incident, including me. I just saw his post in Google Reader, and added this note to it when I put it on my ...

Here we were, thinking Windows 7 was simply a codename (and a fairly boring one at that—where's Longhorn? Whistler?). Now, on the official Windows Vista Blog, MS has came out and declared "Windows 7" the official name of Vista's successor, dev-only pre-betas of which will be released at the upcoming WinHEC and PDC developer conferences over the next few weeks. The reason why probably makes sense, to someone, somewhere... The decision to use the name ...

Microsoft has announced that the latest version of Windows, due in the next couple of years, will be called - drumroll please - Windows 7. It’s about time Microsoft adopted a naming system that might actually make some sense to users, but I can’t wait for hordes of customers to start asking if they somehow missed Windows 1 through 6. Windows has had one of the most ridiculous naming schemes in the history of software. ...

Personally, I'm fine with the Windows 7 branding. To me, it signals that Microsoft is focusing on getting the basics right with Windows -- not a goofy or splashy ad campaign.

Filed under: OS Updates, Microsoft Microsoft has unveiled the official name for the next version of the Windows operating system. Up until now Microsoft officials had been referring to the project as "Windows 7." And now they're going to keep on doing that. But it's not a codename anymore. It's the final name of the upcoming operating system. While other software makers have named their operating systems after the version number (Mac OS 9, or OS ...

Filed under: Desktops, Laptops Microsoft is expected to be handing out pre-betas of Windows 7 to devs at WinHEC and PDC soon, and it looks like it's settled on an official name for its next-gen OS -- ahem, Windows 7. Yep, the code name is the real name, which is a first for Windows. According to Mike Nash on the Vista blog, the company went with Windows 7 because it "just makes sense" as the ...

about time they did this. all the names (XP, Vista, etc) were confusing, and the year-based releases don't age well when your development lifecycles are in the 5 year range.

[Windows 7! Venha e pegue! Whistler?).

I was deciding this morning whether or not to go to your Professional Developer Conference. It’s being hyped up as one of the most important in Microsoft’s recent history. I’ve decided not to go for a variety of reasons. The economy. The numbers of bloggers and journalists who’ll be there (so many the stories will get out). My family, which has seen me on the road too much this year. The fact that I rarely ...

According to Microsoft’s latest Silverlight announcement, Apple shows little to no interest in installing either Silverlight or Adobe Flash on its iPhones. Thanks to the open source nature of Google’s mobile operating system Android, on the other hand, Silverlight on a Google-enabled phone is a prospective possibility for Microsoft — one they’d be eager to jump on. “Basically where we’re at right now is we have talked with Apple,” Microsoft vice president Scott Guthrie admitted. ...

While Kristiansen might not be the smoothest talker in Vegas, he has managed to put together quite a piece of software. As he explains in ...

Filed under: Microsoft Xbox 360, Business We all reacted similarly to the news of a DHL freight train derailment in which 21,600 Xbox 360s were lost due to "impact damage, wetting, pilfering and shortage" -- no, not by inquiring about the well-being of those who were on board at the time of the crash. That would be silly. We reacted, as anyone would, with general concern for the Redmond-based software juggernaut whose precious cargo was ...
