LINQ is a powerful tool enabling quick filtering data based on a standard query language. It can tear through a structured set of data using a simple and straightforward syntax. In the August 2008 issue of MSDN Magazine, Jared Parsons demonstrates a technique to achieve maximum performance from LINQ queries on large sets of data in order to create a responsive UI. Read more about Visual Basic and find more installments of the Basic Instincts ...

Another DZone newsletter crosses my Inbox, and again I feel compelled to comment. Not so much in the uber-aggressive style of my previous attempt, since I find myself more on the fence on this one, but because I think it's a worthwhile debate and worth calling out. The article in question is "5 Reasons Why You Don't Want A Jack-of-all-Trades Developer", by Rebecca Murphey. In it, she talks about the all-too-common want-ad description that appears ...

A couple of folks have asked me recently about Visual Basic versions and .NET Framework versions and how they tie up. I thought I would have a stab at a concept map to demonstrate the relationship. Note that things got very different with the release of VB9. VB9 targets three versions of the framework and really brings to the fore the separation between the language/compiler and the runtime .NET Framework. What that means is new ...

One of the things I was really missing from WPF when I started to dig into data binding was feature consistency between the BindingListCollectionView and the Winforms BindingSource I had grown to love. The BindingListCollectionView provides the navigation, currency, filtering and sorting on the bound collection of data (or DataTable) just like the BindingSource in Winforms. However transacted adding and removing of items to the collections was not supported. You'll notice in my WPF Forms ...

WARNING: This is a speculative post. Caveat emptor. Actually, in this case I don't thing the above warning is strong enough. This is a super speculative post, because I believe the chance of it appearing in the next version of the language is not extremely high, not because it's not a worthy feature but because it's more than a little work and we've got a lot of other very worthy features we're considering. However, since ...

I just posted an interview screencast on Channel 9. In this interview, Jared Parsons, a Developer on the Visual Basic IDE, shows us the P/Invoke Interop Assistant available on CodePlex. The tool helps with converting unmanaged C code to managed P/Invoke signatures and vice versa. Say goodbye to digging through random header files or MSDN documentation to find the right constants, structures and signatures. The P/Invoke Interop Assistant does a smarter translation for you using ...

I sat down with the VB Language design team and asked them about their design process, favorite features, their thoughts on other languages, as well as what the Visual Basic language strategy really is. It was a fun and enlightening interview with a group of really smart people lead by Paul Vick. You can find most of the team members on the Visual Basic Team Blog. And as for the "grey shirt joke" that's mentioned ...

Do you still trust that doctor when he picks up his tools, and asks you to prepare for a lobotomy? Would you still be impressed if the doctor had 20 years of experience in carrying out lobotomies? WARNING: This is a speculative post. Caveat emptor. It's been a while since I've had much of anything to say about our thinking about VB10 (well, it's been a while since I've had much of anything to say) and I wanted to give a quick update on our thinking: Implicit line continuations: we're still considering it. Automatically implemented properties: we're still considering it. Implicitly implemented interfaces: we've put this on the back burner. The feedback ...
