Over three years ago, I was faced with a dilemma. I had recently switched to the Mac (from Linux) and was still using my text editor of choice (vim), but at the time, vim’s “integration” with OS X was pretty minimal (and that’s putting it optimistically). I experimented with emacs, but it never clicked for me, and honestly, emacs on OS X wasn’t all that better than vim at the time. Sadly, reluctantly, I said ...

How timely. Just yesterday I was wondering what the fireball duration was for a 17 kiloton blast!

People have asked which part of our Twitterrific application for the iPhone was hardest to develop. There were many challenges, but the one I found most onerous was scrolling in the UITableView. The code we shipped in 1.0 was obviously flawed. Scrolling was jerky. We weren’t happy with it and neither were users. There was no shortage of “expert” opinions on what was causing it. Some thought it was the loading of the avatar images, ...

Open source photo editing software GIMP 2.6 was released 2 days ago and Adobe Photoshop should be afraid of losing bunch of customers switching to GIMP 2.6 . For one it’s FREE! Runs better on Linux boxes and it’s faster. I use GIMP for few years now and this release 2.6 had bunch of surprises for me . To be honest I never liked Adobe Photoshop on my Ubuntu box. I prefer Gimp 2.6! Read ...

This morning, I had one of my d'oh moments: finally figuring out exactly how to do inter-app copy and paste without breaking SDK rules. It basically goes like this, in a similar fashion to the Core Location service I wrote about a few months ago: To make copy/paste work, you need to install a central application. I'm going to call it "CopyPasteOMatic" for no particularly good reason. It has a custom URL scheme, cpomatic://. You ...

LawWatcher writes "On October 1, 2008, a federal judge in California upheld a class action claiming that Apple and AT&T Mobility's five-year exclusive voice and data service provider agreement for the iPhone violates the anti-monopoly provisions of the antitrust laws. The court also ruled that Apple may have violated federal and California criminal computer fraud and abuse statutes by releasing version 1.1.1 of its iPhone operating software when Apple knew that doing so would damage ...

This is not good. If true, it means that if you release hardware or software, and then a later release of yours breaks unknown aftermarket modifications your customers might have made, you're in trouble. That's bad for business.

This hack available on jailbroken iPhones allows you to hold down the home button when you quit an app to have it continue running in the background. Considering this is homebrew software, it’s probably trivial for Apple to reproduce it but, as we all know, Apple does what Apple wants to do, so we can just suck it.
