By Christina Nellemann When I was a child, my favorite book was “Danny, the Champion of the World” by Roald Dahl. Danny and his father live in a gypsy caravan in the English countryside in the 1950s and run a small gas station. Adventure ensues when Danny finds out his father is secretly poaching pheasants on a wealthy neighbor’s land. I loved the story, but loved the idea of living in a colorful gypsy caravan ...

We think these 9"x12" slate gray chalkboard panels are brilliant! Use inside a kitchen cupboard, a kid's locker, on the fridge, or even right on the wall. The panels are repositionable, removable, and won't harm most wall coverings. Chalk is included so you can start writing your notes and doodles wherever you choose! Includes four panels.

Have you seen this feature on the Martha Stewart site? Some of my recent favorites include the bamboo steamers used as organizers, the paintbrush rack, and the fabrics remnants rack. We have built-in shelves above our (new!) washer and dryer, so we're planning to add a curtain to hide the supplies (just like Martha suggests):

I figure I’ve left you all hanging long enough. Here’s the story of my aunt in part one of a little series I’d like to call Meet the Fuckers: The Tales of my Family. (Seriousness disclaimer: You were warned) My aunt was 21 the year I was born. She was my mother’s first half sister. She had long, blond hair, blue eyes, and I think she just might have been left handed. She was the ...

Los Angeles native Mike Stilkey has always been attracted to painting and drawing not only on vintage paper, record covers and book pages, but on the books themselves. Using a mix of ink, colored pencil, paint and lacquer, Stilkey depicts a melancholic and at times a whimsical cast of characters inhabiting ambiguous spaces and narratives of fantasy and fairy tales. A lingering sense of loss and longing hints at emotional depth and draws the viewer ...

Have you replaced all of your incandescents with CFLs? Or are you more of an LED person? Do you worry about the mercury in CFLs or the fact that it takes a little extra effort to dispose of them properly? Or maybe you're someone who hates the quality of light from a CFL (we know you're out there). Well, it's possible that all these problems will be a thing of the past.A startup in Seattle ...

Typical green imagery for tetra pak wine In Ontario, Canada, the government-owned Liquor stores have been pushing Tetra Paks as eco-packaging, claiming a much lower carbon footprint in manufacture and transport than the traditional glass bottle. They even claim that they are recycled, although I suspect they are just going through the motions; you don't get much value out of pulping seven layers of plastic and paper. I called it greenwash, but after Jenna found ...

A little while back we told you about the BeaterBlade+, a new attachment for KitchenAid stand mixers. (They also have adjustable versions for other mixer models). We were initially rather skeptical; we wondered if the silicone fins would be strong enough to scrape the bowl, or if, conversely, they would be too hard on the bowl. Well, we finally had a chance to try one out! Read on for our reactions... Frankly, our reaction so ...

Today I want to share an idea that I think is very exciting and may be helpful at some point in the future with my son (although I think he's a bit young for it right now!) During the autism conference I recently attended, one of the lectures was on the topic of Applied Research. Dr. Peter Gerhardt from the Organization for Autism Research (OAR) talked about how they are working on taking research and ...

Managing partners Eduardo Longoria and John McCready began with the simple idea to transform the hotel into one that was easier on the air, and that was more than 10 years ago. Now, each decision the management makes is based upon sustainable practices. Everything, right down to the fire extinguishers, has been taken into consideration.

After a long vacation, we were excited to finally come home, but some spider mites had the same idea—and had made themselves at home on our jade. What to do? We whipped up this homemade remedy, so we didn’t have to pull out the pesticide. Here’s How: Ingredients: 1/2 Cup of Hot peppers 4 Cloves of Garlic 3 Cups of Water Directions: Mix ingredients in a blender. Strain (use old stockings for extra credit!) and place ...
