This is the second part of the earlier post to get your new school year off to a humorous start. You choose your child’s medical specialists by whether or not their waiting room has an accessible outlet for your portable DVD player. You get pulled over by a police officer and automatically pull out your insurance card. You volunteer to give blood, not because it’s the right thing to do, but because it’s the only ...

One book that I find myself delving into every six months or so is The Story Factor by Annette Simmonds. She writes about a topic that is close to my heart - the power of storytelling as a way to be influential. One of the points Annette makes early in her book that resonates with me most is that: people don’t need more information - they need ‘faith’ and that stories have the power to ...

When is a Word not just a Word? Have you said it? In a fit of pique? Or frustration? In just normal conversation? Have you referred to your children with the "A Word?" Does it define who they are at that particular moment? Dan Olmsted, over at Age of Autism has been ruffling feathers because he believes we need to abolish the use of the word, "autistic." He is on the right track. I have ...

When my son was young, it seemed as if autism was a monster controlling him. It was a scary time, to say the least. We were not given a great prognosis about his future, at best, his potential was unknown. Then, I noticed he became intrigued by butterflies, literally dancing with glee as he watched them. I remember once, him crawling inside a net basket, and as he came out he "flew" around the room. ...

I am offended.Offended for precious lives that will be hurt by this horrible movie "Tropic Thunder" recently released. My sincere prayer is that the movie flops, the studio looses money, and perhaps the message is heard that this kind of behavior that is not acceptable on the playground, is not acceptable on the screen either.I have taken the music off my blog to allow you to watch the following video. Please take a moment to do ...

Photo by nicasaurusrex Can you name the 100 most commonly used words in the English language in five minutes? I found this link over at Figments of a Mom and was instantly sucked into the random fun. I (sadly) scored 47. I even tried doing it over again (many times) and briefly improved my score slightly, only to have it actually DECREASE on subsequent tries. Maybe because of how late it is? Maybe because my ...

It is often said that people with autism lack empathy, but I think that is not necessarily always the case. I think it's not always recognized becomes sometimes the way they express it may be a little out of the ordinary. And yes, sometimes I think a lack of understanding of nonverbal cues can lead a person with autism to not always recognize when someone is upset (therefore they may not respond with empathy, not ...

The last few days, we’re noticing more and more situations where ds is unwilling to listen to the reason, any reason. We try to tell him something brief and clear, such as “You need to get into the bath now” (after his 10-minute warning) and he blows up, yelling, spinning into a full-blown meltdown, ending with him quietly sobbing, telling us he only wanted a minor deviation in the plan but he didn’t communicate it ...

Getting preschoolers to brush their teeth is easier said than done. To get your child to brush longer than the eight seconds she usually does, name all the foods that she ate that day (or the previous day in the case of early morning), and ask her to remove each of these from her teeth. You’ll get a few extra precious brushing moments out of her. If the two of you brush together, see how ...

While not everyone may agree on a boycott of "tropic thunder" (I wouldn't want to see it anyway....), I think that anyone can agree on the need to stop using the word "retard" outside of its medical usage. The following clip, from Arc of Virginia and the Arc of Northern Virginia, plus Blueberry Shoes Productions is very nice. Enjoy!

This is a guest article by Rajat Bhadani. 1. Content is Important: If people cannot write well, they cannot think well, and if they cannot think well, others will do their thinking for them - George Orwell It’s like good storytelling – your writing needs to guide your audience into what you want them to think/perceive or they will create a picture on their own which might not be necessarily what you originally wanted. 2. ...
