At DEFCON, Tony Kapela and Alex Pilosov demonstrated a drastic weakness in the Internet's infrastructure that had long been rumored, but wasn't believed practical. They showed how to hijack BGP (the border gateway protocol) in order to eavesdrop on Net traffic in a way that wouldn't be simple to detect. Quoting: "'It's at least as big an issue as the DNS issue, if not bigger,' said Peiter 'Mudge' Zatko, noted computer security expert and former ...

Filed under: GPS Navigon has just dropped it's latest satnav baby on us -- the 7200T -- and it comes with an extra side of slick... like, gooey slick. Upping it's game a touch, the device sports a redesigned OS which incorporates real-time traffic updates (free of charge over FM via Clear Channel's Total Traffic Network) as well as "Reality View Pro" and and "Landmark View 3D," the former designed to whip up some photo-realistic ...

This solar power necktie is built with photovoltaic thin film about the same thickness as paper with a similar physical propeties to camera film. The aim of the tie is to charge your personal devices (such as your cellphone or iPod) throughout the day. The ties gathers close to 3.6 volts of power over the course of a very sunny day, so you might still want to stick to your wall sockets, although this could ...

The promise of wireless USB connectivity is a great one. Anyone remember Toshiba’s wireless docking solution for the R400? I haven’t heard much about that in quite some time and there have been other solutions batted about as well. IOGear is due to release a USB wireless VGA kit in September. The kit comes with a transmitter dongle and a receiver with a VGA socket. Supposedly after connecting up, you’ll be able to transmit video ...

The network map is a graphical view of the computers and devices on your network, showing how they are connected. In this article, author Daniel Petri shows how to use Windows Vista's option to make a computer "go away", disappear, and not be seen on the network map for security or personal reasons. I Don't Believe in Imaginary Property writes "The database used by the government to generate lists like the No-Fly List is 'crippled by technical flaws,' according to the chairman of a House technology oversight subcommittee. And the upgrade may be worse than the original. Rep. Brad Miller (D-NC) says that 'if actually deployed, [the upgrade] will leave our country more vulnerable than the existing yet flawed system in operation today.' It seems that the current ...

Looks like IOGear is rolling out quite a few new gadgets for geeks. First the USB Wireless VGA adapter and now comes word of a USB KVM Switch. With a USB plug on each end and a USB port in the middle you can drag and drop between the two machines, and use your laptop to control another machine. It is a bit pricey though a nickel shy of $130. Irvine, CA – August 25, ...

Navigon's upcoming 7200T GPS unit has some pretty high-end features: voice destination entry, photo-realistic 3D views of roads with lane guidance icons and 3D landmarks built-in. But its niftiest feature is free real-time traffic info updates with no subscription fees, for life. That's just got to be handy, and comes over an FM receiver from Clear Channel’s Total Traffic Network. The 3D road rendering is designed to stop you making the mistake I made last ...

While the city of Philadelphia is content with using 3D images to deter speeders, the authorities in ShanXi province, China are taking a far more drastic approach. They built a 100 foot long, 2 foot high, winding speed block smack dab in the middle of the Jing Zhuang highway. Sure, it scratches up cars, looks hideous and causes massive traffic jams, but hey—by screwing everyone it manages to screw the speeders. Suck on that leadfoot! ...

Remember the recent story we had where some researchers noted that, despite the conventional wisdom (and claims from Time Warner), it appeared that Time Warner probably did not own the copyright on Happy Birthday? Of course, the company still collects millions for it, because people assume they do, but the historical evidence suggests that this is really incorrect. Now it turns out that the same thing may be true for Disney's copyright on Mickey Mouse. ...
