How does The Daily Show compile all their amazing clips of politicians saying one thing one day, and the opposite thing several months before? From a long New York Times profile of Jon Stewart and his operation of the show:The day begins with a morning meeting where material harvested from 15 TiVos and even more newspapers, magazines and Web sites is reviewed.Crazy, huh? Chinese P2P solutions provider Vatata, whose similarly named P2P streaming platform Vakaka we wrote about last year, has developed a set-top box solution to bring a Joost-like P2P TV experience to the living room. It provides access to both the company’s own P2P network for live streaming video as well as public P2P networks and protocols such as Emule, Gnutella and BitTorrent for media downloads. Vatata’s CEO Jian Song told me that the company already ...

Poor Internet Television Station Revision3. It’s a case study of an increasing delimma faced by studios/networks moving to YouTube (reluctantly of course). They can’t invite viewers to subscribe to one particular show alone (unless the devide the shows into individual channels). So networks like Revision3 have three choices: Place all its shows up on a indivudal YouTube channels and gain little from the collective. Dump random stuff on YouTube and try desperately to get viewers ...

Have you been to the movies lately? Jeeeeeeeeez. Ridiculous. As I was sitting there for the 20 minutes of commercials and previews before the movie started, I found myself getting worked up a bit. Why? Because of all of the bitching and moaning that I was hearing from the people around me. By the time the 8th commercial played - all before the previews - there was a healthy (or not so healthy) mix of ...

I just found an interesting article in Current. Apparently the upcoming comedy film Tropic Thunder, starring Ben Stiller, Robert Downey Jr., and Jack Black also heavily features TiVo, to the point of it being a major plot point. Every phone conversation between Ben Stiller’s character, Tug Speedman, and his agent, played by Matthew McConaughey, includes a question from McConaughey as to whether Stiller has received his TiVo or not. One of the key developments in ...

Networks continue to insist that online television viewing is additive, but I for one think there’s no way that will last long term. And for the first time ever in May, a significant portion of U.S.-based online viewers of prime-time episodic television shows failed to watch part of those shows on television as well, according to Integrated Media Measurement. Fifty percent of online viewers consider watching prime-time network shows online a replacement for television viewing, ...

Yes, the legs on the concept camera are for looks only, but they help to position ...

Last night we wrote about the new set of embeddable widgets that video streaming service Hulu has launched. It sure seems like the widgets load very slowly. While watching the widget load, I noticed that they are grabbing data and pushing it to Omniture's tracking beacon. This is the same beacon we wrote about with regards to Adobe and their potential spyware. There's nothing in the Hulu privacy policy regarding the widgets and any sort ...

As we get older, our routines become hardened habits. Some recent data suggests mental stimulation (through new behaviors, brain-teasing exercises, and different patterns of behavior) has important benefits (for example, in fighting Alzheimer’s). In poker, when you get predictable, you lose. If you’re always bluffing or always playing tight, the other players pick up on that and can easily use that pattern against you. When you change your strategy mid-game, the poker term for that ...

Last week, we wrote about how the massively successful opening of The Dark Knight showed (once again) how little an impact "piracy" has on movies. But don't tell the movie industry that. The LA Times is running a bizarre article with movie industry folks claiming that their anti-piracy efforts are the real reason the movie was so successful in the theaters. Never mind the awesome reviews. Never mind the fact that many people wanted to ...

I definitely agree with the part about how bad reviews can mean poor ticket sales. I don't pay too much attention to official reviews, but the opinion of people I know means a lot. Also, if you are someone that downloads the movie before it is released, there are two types of responses. You are are probably not going to pay for the movie regardless of whether or not you can get an illegal copy, or you will pay to see it if the movie turns out to be good. I don't see how anti-piracy would help ticket sales in either case. It seems like purposefully releasing the movies even in low-quality would help people see if it is worth paying to see at a theater.

Compressing video is never simple. There are so many ways of doing it, dozens of software applications, several video codecs, countless combinations of settings. So what works best? I’ve been thinking about the optimal video compression settings this weekend and then coincidentally found all these great tutorials in my RSS feed reader this morning: First, I’d like to throw in some thoughts on quick pacing in your edit for the web from Kfir Pravda. With Firefox, you can do much more than simply browse web pages. Pencil is a free add-in that lets anyone sketch complex GUI screens or web page prototypes in Firefox without even being a graphic designer. Pencil includes a set of stencils that you can place on the drawing campus. Right click a shape to edit basic properties like color, border, opacity, etc. Alternatively, you may also drag images from the desktop. Like other illustration ...
