Filed under: Cellphones, Handhelds We can't help but feel the BlackBerry Bold 9000's much-anticipated launch ended up being just a tad bit anti-climactic. Maybe it's a Canada thing, or maybe we're just haters. Or maybe we hate Canada. While we mull that over, you might as well have a look at CrackBerry.com's video unboxing of the new phone, complete with some comparison shots and, um, unboxing. Oh, there's an iPhone versus near the end, so ...

The company behind the popular ICanHasCheezburger site has launched a new website, EngrishFunny, which makes fun of grammatically incorrect variations of English (often found in Asia). Users send in photos of poorly translated or written products, signs, instructions, etc. to the site. This is the seventh website for parent company Pet Holdings, Inc., which bought the ICanHasCheezburger site in late 2007 for $2 million. Other sites include Ihasahotdog (dogs), Failblog (my personal favorite), Totallylookslike (celebrities), ...

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission released documents on Monday that may indicate that the first Android phone will hit the U.S. market in November. The documents show that the FCC has approved the sale of HTC's Dream phone, a device widely rumored to become the first to run Google's Linux-based Android software. HTC asked the FCC to keep some of the details of its filings, including photographs and the user manual, confidential until Nov.10. That ...

Google put up a rather interesting post on its Mobile Blog today. It’s about the decision to put display advertisements on YouTube mobile pages — but the post reads like an ad itself. From the post: This is our first step in testing mobile advertising for YouTube — it will give you a new way to interact with content on the go, while allowing us to learn how video viewers engage with mobile advertising. Presenters at Black Hat revealed that most, if not all, of Windows Vista's security features can be taken out with a single browser exploit, using Java and .NET to execute malicious code. What really makes this a killer, is that it is based around Vista's fundamental architecture, not a specific security flaw, and can be executed with any browser vulnerability. As researcher Dino Dai Zovi told SearchSecurity, "that's completely game over." Microsoft programmers are apparently ...

We all know that YouTube is big. But Dr. Michael Wesch, an anthropologist at Kansas State University, has some interesting insights into why YouTube has gotten so big, and how it and the humble webcam are changing human collaboration, communication and community. In a video that he posted on YouTube a few weeks ago, Wesch explains his theories about the video-sharing service. One of his hypotheses: "When media changes, human relationships change." The evidence he ...

Glenn Greewald's article in Salon about Bruce E. Ivins' suicide is fascinating. Ivins was a senior biodefense researcher at the United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) in Fort Detrick, Maryland. He committed suicide in July shortly before the FBI was going to indict him for his alleged role in the 2001 anthrax attacks. Here are a few excerpts, but the entire article is worth reading: If the now-deceased Ivins really was ...

Heart Robot is a puppet designed to "respond" positively to being stroked and hugged, and to flinch if it's shaken or hit. Heart Robot has a beating heart, a breathing belly, and sensors that respond to movement, noise and touch. Cuddle him, and he seems to soak up the affection. His limbs become limp, his eyelids lower, his breathing relaxes, and his heart beat slows down. But if he is given a violent shake, or ...

Precisely how the Flowlight would work is a little unclear, but the design page notes that a base station would focus a laser beam 100 times a second into a point in the space, creating small plasma points that glow in mid air. Users could then use the pen to draw and write, making doodles look like some sort of fantastic light show. It's kind of like a cross between and blackboard and a laser ...
