GRDDL, a mechanism for putting RDF data in XML/XHTML documents, is specified mostly at the XPath data model level. Some GRDDL software goes beyond XML and supports HTML as she are spoke, aka tag soup. HTML 5 is intended to standardize the connection between tag soup and XPath. The tidy use case for GRDDL anticipates that using HTML 5 concrete syntax rather than XHTML 1.x concrete syntax involves no changes at the XPath levelBut in ...

My browser knows a lot about me. It knows what I’m typing, what I buy, what websites I go to and how often, my calendar, and with whom I communicate. In fact, my computer probably knows more about me than I do myself. Yet, despite the wealth of information about my interests and habits, my browser rarely uses that knowledge to make my life easier. In Mozilla Labs, we’ve been starting to think about how ...

Its good to be back in Portland for my favorite geek convention: O'Reilly's Open Source Conference. The overcast sky in Portland is making it a little easier this year to focus on the plethora of excellent speakers and sessions. The first session to really grip and and speak to me was Rabble and Kellan's "Beyond REST? Building Data Services with XMPP PubSub" presentation. They started out their presentation stating that they were not "Jabber Heads", ...

Well, that was one of them. Put a number in your headline and do a list. You know, there are a ton of tactics that you can use to increase readership. Plenty of blogs will tell you what they are. And Rickie Lee Jones knows full well how to record a top 40 record. Except she doesn't. She chooses not to. She chooses to make a record she loves, instead. Some politicians know all the ...

I will wager right now that this will end up on the shared items list of a bunch of the "mini-hitters" under the assumption that they are the exceptions. Cool thing about RfL, I never follow the rules, bad thing about RfL, I pay for it continually. I sleep well though. Seth always cuts through the muck and drops the gems on us.

In the concept video I recently did for laying out the interface paradigms for Firefox Mobile, I listed five guiding principals. Touch it with your finger Large targets are good Visual Momentum and Physics are compelling Typing is difficult Content is king It’s these principals that inform the design of new features long after the original design as been coded, released, and iterated on. In discussions with the perspicacious Mike Beltzner, another design principal emerged. ...

In response to the previous post, a reader kindly pointed me to the fascinating town of Baarle-Hertog, Belgium.Baarle-Hertog borders the Netherlands – but, because of its unique history of political division, the town is sort of marbled with competing national loyalties. In other words, pockets of the town are Dutch; most of the town is Belgian. You can thus wander from country to country on an afternoon stroll, as if island-hopping between sovereignties.Check out the ...
