Filed under: iPod Family, iTS, iTunes, iPhoneBy definition, nearly all tips we receive about Apple future product intros are wrong. After all, we're not Engadget. People aren't going to risk their jobs to deliver insider information. That being said, a tip that shot into our mailbox this morning really tickled my fancy: not because I think it's accurate but because I really really want it to be true. Our anonymous tipster laid out a description ...

We always see (almost entirely incorrect) ‘outlines’ of keynotes in the runup to any Apple event, now we’re getting them before the runup starts. It’s a pretty safe be that Apple will be doing something in late September or October, they always try to have new iPod announcements before the holiday season. So go grab your salt shaker, pour out a few grains (actually, you might want to use them all), and take a gander ...

Despite the fact that it ships with a DVD drive, for whatever godforsaken reason, the Nintendo Wii doesn't support DVD playback—until last week, that is, when a homebrew hacker released a tool that enables DVD playback on your Wii. The best part? You don't have to crack open your Wii or disturb your hardware in any way to install it. Let's take a detailed look at how to softmod your Wii with the Twilight hack ...

This is a nice detail on how to set up Wii homebrew and DVD playback. I've been running the Homebrew Channel for a couple of months now. I rented Zelda from Blockbuster to install it (f'n $8 for a 5-day rental). By far my favorite Wiibrew app is FCE Ultra, the classic NES emulator. The Wiimote works great for it since the system only had two buttons. It's really nice to have the SD available for installing new Wii homebrew (like the DVD player) as it comes along. I haven't tried the DVD player yet, but I may soon.

Filed under: Cellphones, Portable Audio, Portable Video In what appears to be an increasingly common problem, hairline cracks are beginning to form on Apple's new iPhone 3G. While most of the cracks are reportedly affecting the white model, this is likely due to the increased visibility of the dark fracture on the white case as opposed to any differences in materials between the white and black units. At the moment, the issue seems largely cosmetic ...

Apple has reportedly seeded an early beta of firmware 2.1 (5f90) and a new and improved SDK to developers.
