I was reading Jackie Huba’s and Ben McConnell’s blog and they were interviewing Tom Fishburne as part of the Post2Post blogging book tour he’s doing. So they asked him if branding was dead and if so, where do we bury the body?” The following cartoon was inspired by the question. All I can say, is amen. It’s dead on. It’s a great interview by the way.

Online networking allows you to meet lots of people who you otherwise wouldn’t be able to meet. Instead of one-to-one networking, you can do one-to-thousands networking, and still have some level of intimacy. You can enhance your brand as a thought leader or subject matter expert, and learn from the best minds in a particular space. You can do it on your own time, from your own house… and you don’t even have to brush ...

Remember when MySpace announced it had 100 million users, exactly two years ago? It was a big deal, but critics pointed out that many of those user accounts were inactive, and active users are what really counts. Facebook, on the other hand, has always claimed they don’t sugarcoat their user numbers; they only count active accounts. If you choose to believe them, then today’s unofficial announcement - taken from Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook status update - ...

This content from: Duct Tape Marketing Using Viral Video in Small Business Marketing I had a great visit with Bob Thacker, senior vice president of marketing and advertising at OfficeMax, for a recent episode of the Duct Tape Marketing podcast. Bob is the inspiration behind some very clever viral campaigns of late for office supply retail giant. I wrote earlier about the “Penny Pranks” hidden camera series of videos featuring a comedian trying to make ...

With apologies to all of the spiritualists out there, this post is not to make fun of the “real” 7 deadly sins. This is simply a way to magnify the importance of getting it right versus screwing it up seven times over. Over the last few days Peter Kim and I have exchanged emails over topics that swirl in and around social media marketing, and somehow this blog post evolved. I am not sure how ...

I like the widget that Qik and NewsGator (client) put together for DNC coverage. Widgets are a really interesting delivery model for microsharing from events, because the the content can be simultaneously sent out 1) to/via the application (Twitter, Qik, etc.) 2) at your site via the widget and 3) at the sites and social media pages of fans and followers who add the widget to their sites too. This and some business conversations this ...

I just got a quick note from FriendFeed’s Bret Taylor letting me know that the FriendFeed Beta that MG Siegler spotted the other day is officially out and ready for public consumption. The new look sports a number of new features, all of which will end up getting integrated into the default design once feedback is garnered from the userbase. There are a lot of interesting aspects to the new layout, most of which have ...

Digg is adding its own twist to the whole politicians-listen-to-the-people act that every social media site is getting in on (both YouTube and Facebook co-sponsored televised presidential debates during the primaries, as MySpace is doing in September, for instance). Digg is taking questions from its members to politicians at the national political conventions at Digg Dialogg. (At least they are consistent in misspelling words that end in “g”). The questions that get voted up the ...

Earlier this week I had the chance to sit down and meet with a few members of the Brightcove team, including founder and CEO Jeremy Allaire. We discussed the direction that online video was taking and the stratification seen between consumer and professional markets. And perhaps most interestingly, Allaire was willing to discuss the failures that Brightcove (and the online video space as a whole) has had to grapple with. Since its launch in 2005 ...

When will Twitter reach the outer bands of where it could possibly have the greatest impact on brands and people? Currently the Twitter circles of influence are skewed towards the Twitterati-light blue. These were the early adopters and thusly have 5 figure amounts of followers. The next band-green or the elitists, are folks that in some cases, have as well, thousands of followers and mutually follow thousands of others. This is not as large a ...
