If you've attended college, or at least know somebody who has, you know that students are willing to pay hundreds of dollars a term for some of the most mind-numbing texts alive. Students will wait in line for hours, or go store to store to acquire these textbooks, which might only be available in one location, knowing that to not pay these exorbitant prices and, therefore, miss out on the texts, could lead to lower ...

As Twitter and Techmeme lit up with the news that Pandora might be going under and Muxtape was shuttered, the immediate reaction seemed to be a deep and abiding hatred of the music industry as well as a collective wish that the record labels and governing bodies be sent to any type of available grave. The ironic part is the the recording industry doesn’t need anyone’s help; it’s going to kill itself sooner or later ...

Tom Jenkinson's output as Squarepusher has spanned from IDM and rapidfire "drill'n'bass" to loping breakbeats, electro jazz-funk, and hypnotic drones. The UK electronic musician's most recent album, 2006's Hello Everything, had, well, every one of those things. "Delta -v", the first track available from Squarepusher's upcoming Warp LP, Just a Souvenir, appears to take as its jumping-off point the rock-fuzzed jostling and organic-sounding breakbeats of Hello Everything-era single and Japan-only bonus track "Exciton". With screeches ...

I gave a talk last week at the SocialDevCamp last Saturday on Social Media for business. I also had the opportunity to watch many presentations, both good and not-so-good. I’ve had some great training on presentations from Northwestern (particularly Surepayroll founder Troy Henikoff) and notice where people go right and where people go wrong with their presentations. This is a quick list of seven things that will kill your presentation - avoid these problems as ...

The above video surfaced on Gizmodo and is alleged to have been shot by a passenger on an Air Canada flight during a Space Shuttle launch. There’s no reason to believe that it’s fake, and ignoring the commentary on the video, it’s pretty cool. The speed of the Shuttle as it rises is phenomenal. According to NASA, the Space Shuttle does zero to 17,000 mph (27,400kmh) in 8.5 minutes

Filed under: CultureYou wanna know how we know that cannonball jumping (cannonballing?) is going to be an Olympic sport soon? Not because 29-year-old Doug Bermann said, "This is going to the Olympics, baby," after splashing his way to victory at the Trident Splash National Cannonball Championship in Canada. No, because he did so in a Mario outfit (seen right). Here's what we know: Olympic aquatic gold medalists play Mario games; cannonball champ Doug Bergmann dresses up ...

Agrotech giant Monsanto today hinted at radical new proposals which it said would allow it to secure a long term future in which it could eventually see its global activities entirely free from pestilence from upper echelons of British society. The company plans to eradicate what it sees as its most pressing challenge by selectively altering the DNA of future generations of the Royal family, saying the move was ‘an absolute necessity for our global ...

It seems Twitter is interested in making money, eventually, with the announcement they are dropping outbound SMS from their UK based number. The move leaves everyone outside of the USA, Canada and India in the lurch. In the meantime Twitter recommended a number of web-based alternatives. Twitter is promising a number of more local numbers for any country that it is cost effective to do so. Best of luck to all my foreign Twitter friends ...

I've been on holiday - and mostly offline - in the United States for the last couple of weeks, but one story has caught my eye. Two American "old media" organisations - a TV network and a newspaper - have had ridicule poured upon their heads for crimes against the Web 2.0 orthodoxy. But both companies may feel they are doing what is right for their 2008 audiences - and for their bottom line. First ...

Google blurring out high security sites in Google Maps isn’t new, but photoshopping such sites poorly is definitely new. This location is Holland has a bad case of Photoshop Blues, complete with 2007 Google remnants on the copy: Photoshop Disasters suggests it’s an Alien Landing site. What ever it is, it needed to be covered up fast and without due care and attention. (via Chris Nixon on FriendFeed)
