This summer I read an enlightening book called The Craftsman, by Richard Sennett. And one I highly recommend. A commentary/book review by Alan Moore (citing Lewis Hyde's review in the NYT) on Richard Sennet's new book, The Craftsman. Sennett argues - indirectly - for broader participation in democracy based on the principle that anyone can become a "craftsman." Very interesting argument and worth examining. I sometimes wonder if this underlies my own attempts (bumbling and fumbling) to help my students *create* in digital media as well as critique. That being a craftsman, however imperfect, is a path to intelligent and critical perspective.
