Tim writes "English, German, Simplified Chinese, and Japanese versions of Internet Explorer 8 have been released for public beta. New features include accelerators, which provide instant context menu access for a number of common tasks; automatic crash recovery, which prevents a single page's failures from taking down your entire browser; and browser privacy, a feature that didn't make Firefox 3. I'm primarily a Firefox user, and I've been using IE8 at work (MS) for the ...

OK, let's get this straight. For the past couple of years we've had a great time talking about the merits of conversation, transparency, authenticity, facilitation, participation, and blah blah blah. Having talked about "The Conversation Economy" myself—I'm no exception to the "BLAH". So, we get it—and now it's time to get down to business. From my vantage point there are a few things going on at once, so here's a few thoughts rolling around in ...

In the arms race between local terrorist groups in Iraq and the US occupying forces, things just got more complicated with the development of the "improvised rocket-assisted mortar." Essentially it's IED 2.0, the next step in homebrew explosives that militant groups use against US forces. Though the IRAMs aren't being used widely yet, what's scary about them is that they're mobile, have really bad aim, and pack a punch that's considerably bigger than a conventional ...

User interfaces for computers are modeled after familiar places like offices and houses (hence "folders" and "windows"). But in this design project, called Signterior, architect Nobuhiro Nakamura uses a computer-like interface to help people to navigate a large Shanghai office and shopping structure. I often think this is what the future would look like if I could travel to it: A bewildering world filled with signs and directions I can't parse. Check out a few ...

Shelfari, a social network for bibliophiles, has been acquired by Amazon for an undisclosed amount. Amazon has been a longtime supporter of the Seattle based startup, having invested $1 million in the site in February 2007. The move comes less than a month after Amazon’s acquisition of AbeBooks, a vendor of rare and used books from independent publishers. As part of that acquisition Amazon also got a stake in Shelfari’s competitor LibraryThing, which AbeBooks had ...

In a fast-paced business culture of "get everything done yesterday," it's easy to admire and reward those busybusy people who always seem to be juggling fourteen things at once. But business coach Dave Crenshaw argues that the most common kind of multitasking doesn't boost productivity—it slows you down. In his new book, The Myth of Multitasking: How "Doing It All" Gets Nothing Done, Crenshaw explains the difference between "background tasking"—like watching TV while exercising—and "switchtasking," ...

Rich Byrne once challenged me that the more you multitask, the less quality all of your result are. I took that as advice to stop checking my blackberry and texting someone on my iPhone while he was talking.I think there is another story, though - multitasking at the right time is very valuable. I see many people who attend 4 hour meetings without brigning their laptops - and then during the 2.5 hours where their attention isn't needed, they just doodle or try to inject their great ideas into areas that don't need them. I think if we understand that most people don't deserve my full attention (though, Rich Byrne definitely does) then we can all get much more done.Anyone know a polite way of saying, "Excuse me for typing while you are talking, but you're only worth 28% of my attention"?

When formerly-free phone-to-text service Jott announced they would start charging for its smartest functions this week, it caught a lot of fans by surprise. Good, free things can't last forever, but once you get used to adding calendar appointments and to-do items, emailing or texting friends, and even blogging directly from a phone call, it's hard to imagine losing those tools. While $4/month isn't an unfair price, many folks just don't shell out for web-based ...
