Last night Mozilla started offering a major update for Firefox 2.0.0.16 users to Firefox 3.0.1, the current version. Firefox 2 users will have the option to postpone the update for 24 hours (clicking on Later), or start the update right away (clicking on Get the new version). Pressing Never however doesn’t really mean never but “much later” (several weeks) which is what the label should read. Users will be prompted with an updated End User ...

John has announced the Firebug 1.2 final release. As well as just supporting Firefox 3, there are some quality improvements: The Script panel (the JavaScript debugger), the Net panel (network monitoring), and Console panel have all seen considerable updates. They’re all much more performant and have a huge number of bug fixes. Specifically the Console panel has seen a number of security improvements. We’ll be discussing the specific nature of these changes once everyone has ...

John Resig is working on a new selector engine called Sizzle: This is a new selector engine that I’m working on. It’s a work in progress! Not ready for use yet! It’s definitely not ready yet (got some minor outlier bugs in the standards-compliant browsers - and a bunch of major bugs in IE still left to tackle) but the results are already promising. 4x faster in Firefox 3, 3x faster in Opera 9, 1.5x ...

By Linsey KnerlI'm all for taking care of the world around us. In fact, it surprises my friends and family when I share my enthusiasm for sustainability and wise use of our natural resources. Is it possible, however, that we've taken “green” issues at more than their face value? Do we accidentally limit our discernment and give false credence to anything that calls itself “globally-aware”? Of course. And here are four ways we sell ourselves ...

A year ago, I was offered a contractual design job for a middle-sized corporation, although I knew there were other candidates. At the end of my interview, I was told that they would call me to let me know if I’ve been hired. What actually happened was the opposite - they called me to ask me to execute 3 different drafts for the project, and if they liked what they saw, I would get paid. ...

JSLint is an old tool in the toolbox, created by Douglas Crockford. I am sure you know about it. But, do you know how often it is updated? You may notice the “Edition 2008-08-18″ on the site, which shows that it was updated recently. After being on the jslint group, I see that there are very regular updates such as the last one that I saw: I added a onevar option. It allows only one ...

Mark Russinovich and his Sysinternals applications have an excellent reputation among IT professionals. The newest application Microsoft Desktops will surely add to that. It was developed by Mark and Bryce Cogswell and provides the user with up to four virtual desktops to organize the applications. The interesting aspect about Microsoft Desktops is that it is a lightweight application. It uses less than four Megabytes of computer memory to run which is a very good value ...

By Paul Michael In this day and age of the internet, free Google 411 and a host of other paperless directory services, what use do the big, fat phone directories serve? I don’t know about you, but when I get those large plastic bags filled with 3lb phone books, I usually put them straight in the recycling bin. We never use them. Now a website similar to the National No-Call registry is asking you to ...

One of the things I like to do when evaluating an application or service is to also look to see if the company has a product blog, and how frequently it is updated. I have found that regular posting on a blog is a great indicator of a companies general attitude about the importance of communicating with their customers. A good company blog lets us know about new features, gives us tutorials and tips, and ...

As we’ve recently discussed, telecommuting and web work are becoming more popular. Inevitably, this leads to some backlash from those who prefer to preserve old ways of working. One example: a recent article in Computerworld titled “Get tough on telecommuting: 6 questions to ask before you say yes.” While caution is a good thing, we think there are answers to all of these questions - and we’ll present them here to help you with your ...

Running Vhosts Under Separate UIDs/GIDs With Apache2 mpm-peruser On Debian Etch This article explains how you can install and configure apache2-mpm-peruser on a Debian Etch server. apache2-mpm-peruser is an MPM (Multi-Processing Module) for the Apache 2 web server, very similar to apache2-mpm-itk, but faster (almost as fast as apache2-mpm-prefork). mpm-peruser allows you to run each of your vhosts under a separate UID and GID - in short, the scripts and configuration files for one vhost ...

It is virtually impossible to keep an overview of all the system changes of a computer system. Windows does not offer a way to keep track of the changes that are made by applications, updates and the operating system and even if there was a way it would provide the user with a long list of system changes leaving inexperienced and probably even many experienced users in doubt. Monitoring system changes should therefor concentrate on ...
